We’re currently looking for a Plan Checker responsible for reviewing, checking and inspecting construction documents, including plans and specifications for construction of new buildings, alterations, and city infrastructure to ensure compliance with prevailing codes.

  • Reviews, checks, and inspects construction documents for construction of new buildings, alterations, and infrastructure improvements to determine compliance with applicable codes
  • Communicates with contractors, architects, engineers, or other city agencies
  • Communicates with the public verbally and in writing to discuss compliance of plans, documentation, and specifications with appropriate codes
  • Explains and interprets existing codes, regulations, and other ordinances concerned with construction or alterations to provide the public with information on mandatory procedures and requirements
  • Provides data for monthly reports which support recommendations for revisions and monitors bureau’s procedural policies
  • Recommends revisions to plans and specifications when needed for compliance with codes
  • Maintains and updates record documents such as as-built/record drawings
  • Drives a vehicle to meetings and job sites
  • Recommends code revisions as necessary
  • Performs related duties as required


  • Two years of verifiable experience in design, plan checking/review, preparation of preliminary and final work drawings and specification preparation
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license


  • Knowledge of codes, regulations, and ordinances pertaining to code enforcement (plumbing codes, public works codes, subdivision regulations, ADA standards, hazardous materials/abatement, general construction methods and materials, and design and construction types)
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret and explain engineering plans and specifications; deal courteously and effectively with professional engineers, architects, building contractors, and the public
  • Write specifications, constructability analysis, reports, correspondence, and recommendations
  • Apply knowledge of the various codes to effective plan checking
